5 Fivetran Use Cases – Examples Of How Companies Are Implementing Fivetran Into Their Modern Data Stack
gBig data is the new commodity that companies need to drive the business forward. Having access to all your companies data sets used to be limited to large companies that could afford a whole team of data engineers and software developers. But this is no longer the case.
Traditionally you would need to have a large team of data engineers to connect to all these various data sources, set up complex ETL jobs using either custom scripts or python libraries like Airflow and Luigi and then they would have to ensure that those pipelines were constantly running.
This method is both time consuming and expensive.
Thankfully, there are modern tools that can help your team simplify your data workflow and instead of 4, 5 maybe 10 data engineers. You can go down to just one.
One of those tools is Fivetran.
In this article we will look at five different companies and how they used Fivetran to improve their modern data flows.
How Canva Is Using Fivetran
Canva prides itself on being the premier provider of design and publishing tools online. To reach its broad customer base, the company relies on big data to understand its customers’ wants. Getting accurate data to back up an effective marketing campaign was a challenge that Greg Roodt, Head of Data Platforms and Canva, had to overcome. Greg wanted to analyze data from various data sources such as Facebook and Google.
Together with a data engineering team, he put up a data pipeline initially with three connectors.
The process of putting together the three connectors was time-consuming. When the time came that the marketing team put in a request for twenty-five additional connectors, Greg decided it was time to switch to something bigger. By switching to Fivetran, Canva has been able to generate information from dozens of platforms. With the data available from a large data stack, Canva can now compare the effectiveness of various campaigns across different platforms.
This gives the company an unobstructed 360-degree view of customer behaviors and helps optimize marketing efforts by targeting the right audience. Canva has been able to enhance customer retention through the Fivetran consulting partners.
How Lendi Uses Fivetran
Fivetran has helped Lendi, an Australia-based mortgage company, make data-driven decisions in its business. With the intense competition in the mortgage industry, it is essential to deliver the right services, to the right people, at the right time. To do this, the company has to know what its borrowers’ needs and preferences are. To analyze third-party data, Daniel Deng, a data architect at Lendi, turned to Fivetran.
An extensive library of connectors to various SaaS platforms answers the question: “Why use Fivetran?”. Because of Fivetran, Lendi can pull information from multiple sources and load them into a data warehouse managed by Snowflake. This data can then be readily available to be used by marketers to measure the success of campaigns across all platforms. Besides being an effective marketing tool, other departments can also access the data to create reports and analytics. Because Fivetran has an extensive library of connections, a Jira ticket can be made for new connection requests, and a new connection can be set up in less than an hour. This saves the company time and effort, which they can put into improving the company’s proprietary technology.
How GroupM Uses Fivetran
As the biggest Nordic media company, GroupM relies on data collection to measure the effectiveness of its marketing campaigns. The company serves over 200 clients with services that enable them to connect with premium partners such as social media giants, Facebook and Amazon. Group M initially used Supermetrics to pull marketing data into Google sheets with a data team of only five people.
This was tedious work for such a small team, and results were often tainted with human errors. The company’s clients wanted easier, faster access to data, and the methods used could no longer meet the demands. Through Fivetran, GroupM was able to streamline data processing through this pipeline solution. Fivetran’s self-healing feature has sped up data collection from a maximum of 15 sources. This data was uploaded in real-time to Google BigQuery and has been the basis for automatic reporting. GroupM intends to transition further into using the Connect Card, wherein clients can log in directly to the data source and initiate a sync, eliminating the need for clients to share proprietary data with GroupM. Fivetran has helped foster better client relationships and save the company over two weeks worth of work monthly.
How Datacamp Uses Fivetran
Founded in 2013, DataCamp now offers more than 340 online courses on data science education, such as Python, R, and SQL. Even with several SaaS applications under its belt, the company understood that it was more cost-effective to outsource an automated solution such as Fivetran instead of building a pipeline internally.
By adding Fivetran to its modern data stack, DataCamp has effectively synced data, detected API changes, and provided notification for any issues. Centralizing its data has given DataCamp the advantage of having more free time that the company can use towards increasing team productivity. Fivetran has helped the company make the right business decisions by providing insightful data such as customer lifetime value (LTV) and creating an ideal customer profile through data acquired from Fivetran.
How Databricks Is Using Fivetran
When Chris Klaczynski joined Databricks in 2019, he found himself in a data jungle. Due to the increasing demand, employees put the data hastily into Notebooks, Alteryx, and legacy pipelines coming from central teams. With the traditional data warehouse, the company lost the trust of stakeholders who constantly found errors in the data reporting. Certain factors resulted in a break in the pipeline that translated to stale data.
Through running a trial with Fivetran, Chris was able to appreciate the benefits of Fivetran consulting. Now the company uses Fivetran to funnel all the data from their core marketing systems. Once in their lakehouse, the team at Databricks works together to transform it in a meaningful way that results in machine learning and analysis through Tableau dashboards. Fivetran has saved Databricks over 40 hours of data engineering time monthly. In the end, this is only one of many possible use cases.
Should your company use Fivetran?
If the question of “Why use Fivetran?” has not been answered by now, you may need to evaluate your company’s need for big data value. However, if your company wants reliable and fast data through a secure pipeline, Fivetran can get you the needed results. Fivetran can help augment your existing modern data stacks and ETL processes. Through Fivetran, you can easily replicate your applications, processes, and databases into a cloud data warehouse. In addition to its practical applications, Fivetran can save your company hours of work that can otherwise be used for more meaningful, value-adding activities.
